MEMPHIS, Tenn. - University of Memphis head softball coach Natalie Poole announced today the hiring of Heather Mosser as an assistant coach.
Mosser follows Poole and assistant coach Andy Lott from McNeese State where she had been elevated to an assistant coach in the summer after serving the 2011 season as a student volunteer coach. She also played two years for Poole as the Cowgirls' starting first baseman from 2009-10.
"I've coached Heather for two years and always had a feeling watching her presence on the field that she would be a good coach," Poole said. "She wanted that opportunity when she got done playing, and we provided that by making her a volunteer coach. She put her time in, and I moved her into assistant coach at McNeese before moving here.
"I didn't have any hesitation moving her here because she is someone who wants to be a coach, knows how to play the game and I know she will be loyal to our staff and that's exactly what we want."
A native of Mont Belvieu, Texas, Mosser will assist with hitting and infield as well as working a little with the outfield.
"I'm really excited to be here," Mosser said. "Since I've spent the last three years playing for Coach Poole and working under her as a coach, I've developed a good relationship with her. We trust each other and kind of know what each other expect. I know what she wants, and I can help produce that. So, it's been an easy transition for me coming to Memphis."
While playing for McNeese State, Mosser was a two-time All-Southland Conference performer in 2009 and 2010. She led the team with a .377 on base percentage as a junior and tied for a team high three home runs. She was second on the team with 23 RBI's, 28 walks and was sixth on the team with a .233 batting average.
Mosser batted .273 as a senior with a .378 slugging percent, 26 RBI's and three home runs. She was also selected to the Southland Conference All-Tournament team. Prior to arriving at McNeese, Mosser played two season at Temple Junior College where she earned all-conference and team MVP honors. At Temple, she produced a .416 batting average, 36 RBI's, four home runs and a .608 slugging percentage in 2008. Mosser was named to the first team All-Region and second team NFCA All-American team.
Mosser graduated from McNeese State in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in general studies. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in health and promotion.
