MEMPHIS, TENN. - Former University of Memphis standout offensive lineman Harry Schuh will become the fifth football player in Tiger history to have his jersey retired at the U of M. Schuh will be acknowledged at Memphis Madness Friday night at FedExForum, and at the Memphis-East Carolina football game on Saturday evening.
From 1962-64, Schuh was one of the most dominant offensive linemen in all of college football. The Pennsylvania native started for Coach Billy J. Murphy's Tigers and helped his team to a three-year record of 22-5-1. By the conclusion of his senior season, Schuh had become the most decorated football player in school history. He was named to 11 All-America teams, including The Sporting News, Associated Press, United Press and the Football Coaches Association teams.
Following his collegiate career, Schuh was taken by the Oakland Raiders as the second player selected in the 1965 Draft, behind Alabama quarterback Joe Namath. He played six seasons for the Raiders, three years for the Los Angeles Rams and one season for the Green Bay Packers. Schuh was an All-Star selection in 1968 and 1969 and was selected to play in the NFC-AFL Pro Bowl Game in 1970.
Schuh's grandson Stephen Schuh lettered as an offensive lineman for the Tigers from 2003-06.
The other Tigers to have their jerseys retired include Isaac Bruce (1992-93), Dave Casinelli (1960-63), Charles Greenhill (1983) and DeAngelo Williams (2002-05).
The Tigers host the ECU Pirates on Saturday evening at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium for their only home game in the month of October. Kick time is set for 6 p.m. CT for the Conference USA matchup.
