MEMPHIS, TENN. - The official grand opening/ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly-constructed Tiger Lane tailgating area at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m. The event is open to the public, and will include dignitaries from the Memphis Mayor's office, the University of Memphis, the Southern Heritage Classic and the AutoZone Liberty Bowl Classic.
Gone from the previous "Fairgrounds" landscape in and around the stadium are the Arena Building, the Mid-South Fair offices, the cattle and livestock barns, the Youth Building and numerous other structures that had outlived their usefulness.
The Memphis City Council approved in June the construction of Tiger Lane, a modern tailgating area designed for pre-game entertaining of the fans. The new parking site is located west of the stadium and will enter off of East Parkway. Tiger Lane contains over 550 reserved parking spaces specifically designed to enhance the game-day experience.
Tiger Lane provides fans a spacious parking area, 10'x20'spaces, along with a 10'x10' grass pad for entertaining. Patrons can place their grills on the pads for food preparation, as well as an electrical outlet. Tailgaters must make sure that all of their tailgating equipment fits into their assigned space. No staking or drilling will be allowed on the lawn or asphalted areas due to a new irrigation system and the repaving project.
Plans call for the Tiger football team to enter each game with the "Tiger Walk" to take place along Tiger Lane. The team will walk among the fans and will be led into the stadium by the band, TOM III and the spirit squads.
