Kevin McGiven, who has experience both as an offensive coordinator and a quarterbacks coach, will be guiding the Tiger QBs this season. He inherits a talented and deep group, but also a group that lacks game day experience.
Heading into camp next week, the stable of quarterbacks includes sophomores Tyler Bass, Cannon Smith and Andy Summerlin and freshmen Will Gilchrist and Ryan Williams. Of the five, Bass is the only player with experience at Memphis, but he has had both of his seasons cut short by injuries. Smith transferred from Miami, and he and Gilchrist, who redshirted in 2009, practiced with the Tigers last season. Williams and Summerlin joined the team for spring practice, but Summerlin suffered a shoulder injury that could delay his return to the field until later in the fall.
McGiven came to Memphis after one season at Utah State, where he served as assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator while guiding the quarterbacks. A graduate of Utah Valley State, he also worked three seasons at Weber State (2006-08), earning the title of offensive coordinator in 2007.
McGiven sat down with Memphis Tiger Vision and spoke about why he chose to come work for Coach Porter, what factors played into his decision to come to Memphis from Utah State and his expectations for 2010.
The Tigers officially report for fall camp on Sunday and will have their first practice on Monday afternoon.
The 2010 Highland Hundred Kick-Off Banquet is slated for Friday, Aug. 6, at the Hilton Hotel at 939 Ridge Lake Boulevard. Social hour is from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m., with a dinner and the program to follow. Admission is $40 per person and is open to the public.
Season tickets, as well as individual away game tickets, are on sale now for the 2010 season. Season tickets for the six home contests are $200 in the prime seats and $100 in the fun zone. Away ticket prices are as follows: Mississippi State ($40), East Carolina ($40), UTEP ($25), Louisville ($47), Marshall ($32) and UAB ($30).
