KANSAS CITY, Mo. – University of Memphis women’s soccer senior midfielder Vendula Strnadova was named a third team All-American as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on Friday.
“First of all, I am overly ecstatic for Vendula,” head coach Brooks Monaghan said. “She absolutely deserves the award. From a selfish standpoint, what she has done for this program is amazing. She is a pro and such a good person and a very talented soccer player. Sometimes you aren’t the biggest name and go un-recognized, so it’s nice to see the attention she has received. She deserves this award in so many ways. She deserves all the credit in the world for what she has done here at the University of Memphis.”
Strnadova, the Conference USA Midfielder of the Year and four-time first team all-conference selection, wrapped up her Memphis career with a four goal, six assist campaign to climb to fifth place in program history in each category. Starting all 22 matches, Strnadova is tied for the program for matches played with 86 and also holds the record for shots in a career with 246.
The Las Cruces, N.M., native is the second Lady Tiger soccer student-athlete to receive All-America status in program history and it’s the second-straight season a Lady Tiger has been recognized as an All-American after Ashley Berra earned the honors in 2009.
“I think this is another step in the right direction for this program,” Monaghan added. “This program has changed so much in every single area. We are becoming recognized nationally in all areas from our national rankings, to our all-Americans, to the success in the classroom. This kind of recognition is what you strive for, so it’s great that it is coming to fruition.”
Strnadova, a three-time first team NSCAA All-Central Region selection, was a major factor in Memphis’ fourth-straight C-USA Championship. Memphis finished with a 15-4-3 record, the second-best finish in program history, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for a fourth-straight season.
“(Receiving this award) is a great way to end my career here at the U of M,” Strnadova said. “Hopefully now that our team gets more recognition, more girls will be recognized in the future. We have a lot of great players. This is exciting, but sad at the same time to leave the program at such a different place than when I first came here.”
Junior defender Lizzy Simonin joined Strnadova on the NSCAA All-Central Region First Team. Simonin, the 2010 C-USA Defensive Player of the Year, helped Memphis tie the program record with a 0.84 goals-against average and finished with 22 starts and a three goal, two assist season.
