#14/15 Memphis (6-0) 78, Arkansas State (1-6) 71
Dec. 1, 2010
FedExForum - Memphis, Tenn.
• Following the 60th meeting between the schools, the Tigers are now 32-28 against the Red Wolves; Memphis hasn't lost to the Red Wolves since the 1999-2000 season.
• The Tigers picked up their first overtime victory since Dec. 4, 2007, when they defeated Southern California by a score of 62-58.
• It marked the second time the Tigers and Red Wolves went into overtime; Feb. 22, 1947, Arkansas State and Memphis played an overtime thriller with Arkansas State prevailing, 58-56.
• The overtime was the Tigers first at home since an 81-80 loss to Austin Peay, Nov. 22, 2002; it was the Tigers first home overtime victory since Jan. 18, 2001 when Memphis defeated Saint Louis, 72-63.
• The Tigers controlled the opening tip for the sixth time this season and are undefeated when controlling the ball first.
• The Tigers gave up an opening three-pointer to Arkansas State's Donald Boone, then proceeded to go on a 23-2 run from 18:18 until 7:38 left in the first half during which the Tigers missed just four shots from the floor.
• Memphis managed only nine made baskets from the floor in the first half, the second-lowest output in a half this season.
• Turnover woes: Memphis committed 11 turnovers in the first half, tied for most in a half this season (first half, Northwestern State). The Tigers settled down slightly in the second half and finished with 17 turnovers in the game, the second-highest total of the season, and marking the ninth game in a row the Tigers have turned the ball over 10 or more times.
• Freshman guard Antonio Barton gave the Tigers their first four-point play of the season, nailing a three while getting fouled by Boone with 15:32 left in the second half.
• Barton also tied a career-high with three three-pointers.
• The Barton brothers (Will & Antonio) each finished in double figures, the first time in their Memphis careers both have scored double-digit points in the same game; Will finished with 20 points, while Antonio had 10.
• Will Barton's 20 points marked the third 20-point or better game of his young Tiger career. He also played a career-high 39 minutes, most by a Tiger this season.
• Freshman Chris Crawford's three-pointer with 9:38 to go in the second half gave him five games in a row with a made three-pointer.
• Crawford and Will Barton also had three steals apiece, which was Crawford's career-high; a Tiger has now had at least three steals in all six games this season.
• The Tigers went 20-for-25 from the charity stripe, an 80 percent clip; Memphis has now shot 80 percent or better from the line twice in six games this season after doing it only seven times in 34 games last season.
• Junior Wesley Witherspoon went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe, his third double-digit free throw attempt game this season. Witherspoon is shooting 86 percent (43-for-50) from the line in six games this season.
• Sophomore DJ Stephens came off the bench to tie a career high with six points.
• Arkansas State stretched the lead to four with 3:42 left in overtime before the Tigers roared back for the victory; Memphis has yet to trail by more than four points at any time in the 2010-11 season.
