OFFENSIVE NOTES
• Curtis Steele rushed 12 yards for a touchdown with 6:10 remaining in the first quarter for his third TD of the season; the 10th of his career. Steele scored twice from the run last week versus Ole Miss, and has now scored in seven of his last eight games for the Tigers. In that eight-game span, he has scored 11 TDs. Steele left the game in the second quarter with an apparent knee injury.
• Duke Calhoun caught a three-yard pass from Arkelon Hall in the second quarter to advance his receiving streak to 39 games. Calhoun has caught a pass in each of his 39 career games played. He came into the game ranked third nationally in active receiving streaks.
• Senior receiver Steven Joachim caught a 14-yard pass from Arkelon Hall in the third quarter. It was a career-best reception for Joachim, who had his first reception - a 13 yarder against Ole Miss last weekend.
• Senior receiver Duke Calhoun had a 12-yard catch at the start of the fourth quarter to set a new school record in career receiving yardage. His career total is 2,138 yards. He surpassed Earnest Gray, who totaled 2,123 yards from1975-1978. Calhoun set the school record for career receptions last weekend, and with his four catches today now has 153 career catches.
• Sophomore quarterback Tyler Bass came in with just over eight minutes left in the game. It was only his third career game for the Tigers. He played against East Carolina last season when Memphis lost two QBs in the first quarter, and played the next game against Southern Miss. He was 9-of-10 for 107 yards and had 51 yards rushing before leaving that game with a knee injury. Bass finished the game four of four for 33 yards and 17 yards rushing on five carries.
• Lance Smith scored his first rushing touchdown of his career in a Memphis uniform on a three-yard carry with 1:47 left in the fourth quarter. It is his ninth career rushing touchdown with Smith scoring eight TDs in two years at Wisconsin.
DEFENSIVE NOTES
• True freshman Dontari Poe dropped QB Dwight Dasher for a loss of three yards for his first TFL of his short career. He added another TFL for minus three yards later in the game on a sack and finished the meeting with four tackles, including two TFL for six yards.
• Defensive back Alton Starr jostled Phillip Tanner and forced him to fumble the ball on 3rd-and-28 late in the second quarter, and defensive end Jada Brown pounced on the ball for the turnover. It was Starr's first forced fumble and Brown's second recovery. Brown previously had a recovery in 2006 against UTEP. The play was reviewed to determine if Tanner was down, but the call on the field stood.
• Defensive lineman Greg Terrell sacked Dwight Dasher for an eight-yard loss in the third quarter for his seventh career sack. Terrell finished the day with three tackles.
• Winston Bowens had a career high in tackles for loss with two for a total loss of two yards. Bowens finished with seven tackles in the game.
• Greg Jackson led the team with eight tackles and had one TFL for a loss of three yards.
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES
• Matt Reagan is punting for only the second game of his career, and through today's game has logged three 50-yard punts and has dropped eight kicks inside the 20, including five against MTSU. Reagan's 10 punts against Middle Tennessee are the most by a Memphis kicker since Ben Graves had 10 in 2000 against Mississippi State. The last time Memphis had 10 punts as a team was in 2005 against UTEP.
• Lance Smith logged 121 yards on five kick returns for his first game over 100 yards in a Tiger uniform. He averaged 24.2 yards on his returns and had a long return of 37 yards to open the game.
