KANSAS CITY, Mo. - University of Memphis' Robert Dozier and Tyreke Evans were named to the 2008-09 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 11 first team, the organization announced Thursday. Antonio Anderson was selected to the NABC All-District 11 second team.
It is the second-straight year that three Tigers earned NABC All-District honors, as Chris Douglas-Roberts (first team), Derrick Rose (first team) and Joey Dorsey (second team) took home NABC honors last year. It is the eighth-consecutive season a Tiger was named to the NABC All-District squad.
Memphis is the only team in the district to have two players on the first team and three players on the two all-district squads. All three Tigers are now eligible for the State Farm Coaches' All-America teams to be announced Apr. 4 at the NCAA Final Four.
Dozier is second on the team in scoring (12.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg), and leads the Tigers with 50 blocks. He is shooting 52 percent from the field, 40.4 percent from the arc and 71.5 percent from the free throw line. He is ranked among the Conference USA leaders in scoring (18th), rebounding (11th), field goal percentage (5th) and blocks (4th).
Earlier in 2008-09, the Lithonia, Ga., native became the 44th member of the Tiger 1,000-point club. He now has 1,286 career points and is in the No. 17 spot on the Memphis all-time scoring chart. The 6-foot-9 forward also has 886 rebounds and is one of seven players in Tiger hoops history to have 1,000 points and 750 rebounds.
Evans, who is an Oscar Robertson Trophy finalist for National Player of the Year, leads the Tigers in scoring (16.9 ppg) and steals (61). He is averaging 5.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists, while shooting 45.4 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free throw line. The eight-time Conference USA Rookie of the Week is ranking among the league leaders in scoring (7th), rebounding (14th), field goal percentage (8th), assists (9th) and steals (2nd).
The Chester, Pa., native is ranked fourth on the Memphis all-time freshmen steals list with 61 swipes. He is also closing in on the top five on the Tiger all-time freshman scoring chart.
Anderson, a two-time member of the Conference USA All-Defensive Team, is the Tigers' third-leading scorer (10.5 ppg) and leads the squad with 125 assists (4.2 apg). The 6-foot-6 guard is second on the team with 45 steals, while shooting 43.1 percent from the floor and 76 percent from the charity stripe. He is ranked among the Conference USA leaders in scoring (29th), assists (6th), steals (11th) and assist-to-turnover ratio (8th).
In late December, Anderson reached the 1,000-point milestone for his career, becoming the 45th Tiger in school history to do so. The Lynn, Mass., native now has 1,213 career point and is in the No. 23 spot on the Memphis all-time scoring chart. Anderson enters Saturday's game with Tulane three assists shy of 500 dimes for his career. When he reaches that mark, Anderson will be the first player in Memphis history to have 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists.
The Tigers (27-3, 15-0 C-USA), ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press poll and No. 3 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, play their regular season home finale Saturday, Mar. 7 versus Tulane (13-15, 7-8 C-USA). Game time is 12 p.m. (CT), and Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS; Memphis cable channel 6) is televising the contest.
