MEMPHIS POSTGAME NOTES
Game 10 - vs. UAB- November 14, 2009 - Memphis, Tenn.
MISCELLANEOUS TEAM NOTES
· Captains for today's game were seniors Greg Jackson, Brett Toney, Alton Starr and Greg Terrell.
· Senior Paul Edwards saw his first career game action at right guard on the offensive line late in the fourth quarter.
OFFENSIVE NOTES
· Lionel Henderson and Michael Antonescu had their first starts in today's game. Henderson started at center for Brad Paul, who injured his elbow, and Antonescu started at right guard for Dominik Riley, who suffered a knee injury versus Tennessee.
· Senior receiver Duke Calhoun extended his receiving streak to 47 games with his 1-yard catch in the first quarter. Heading into today's game, Calhoun ranks third nationally with his receiving streak. He has caught a pass in every game that he has played for the Tigers.
· Carlos Singleton had a 10-yard reception in the second quarter to extend his receiving streak to 15 games. It is the second-longest streak on the team behind Calhoun's 47-game mark. Singleton finished the game with six receptions for 76 yards.
· Senior running back Curtis Steele rushed for an 11-yard touchdown in the second quarter following UAB's fumbled punt return that Memphis' DajLeon Farr recovered at the 11. He later added a second touchdown in the fourth quarter. He now has nine rushing TDs in 2009; and 16 during his career. Steele has scored in 10 of his last 14 games, and totals 15 TDs during that time. He leads the Tigers in scoring this year with 60 points.
· Curtis Steele, who totaled 107 yards on 20 carries today, has continued his rise through the Tiger record book, moving to No. 7 all-time in school history with 2,070 yards. He surpassed Terdell Middleton, who totaled 1,970 yards from 1973-76. Steele is the only two-year player on the Tiger Top 10 rushing list.
· Will Hudgens completed 26 of 41 passes for 333 yards today to advance in the Tiger Top 10 for QBs. Hudgens now totals 231 completions to rank seventh; 2,621 passing yards to rank ninth; and 412 attempts to rank ninth.
· Duke Calhoun caught four passes for 79 yards today to improve from fourth to third in single-season receiving yardage with 881 yards on the year. He is nine yards away from matching his sophomore total of 890 yards in 2007, which ranks second.
· Curtis Steele scored his second rushing touchdown of the game with 4:34 left in the fourth quarter. He has now scored multiple touchdowns in four games this season and totals five for his career.
· Curtis Steele had his 10th career 100-yard rushing game with 107 yards on 20 carries against UAB. He totals four 100-yard games this season with all four coming in the last five games. His 10 career 100-yard rushing games ranks third all-time in school history and one away from tying Gerard Arnold for second with 11.
· Will Hudgens had his third career 300-yard passing game with 333 yards against UAB. It is his second 300-yard game of the season and second in the last three games. The 333 yards is a season best for Hudgens and 13 yards shy of his career best of 346 yards totaled against Marshall in 2007.
· With his 107 yards today, Curtis Steele now totals 847 yards this season, advancing him to 11th in single-season yardage at Memphis.
· Senior Brett Toney came in at quarterback late in the fourth quarter and rushed the ball six-yards for a touchdown on his first snap with 1:48 left in the game. The rushing touchdown is the first of Toney's career.
DEFENSIVE NOTES
· Josh Weaver registered a sack of Joe Webb for a loss of 12 yards in the first quarter to force UAB to punt. Weaver has registered a sack in the last two straight games, and leads the team with four. Weaver also matched a career high and recorded a season best with two tackles for loss in the game, totaling a loss of 14 yards.
· Greg Terrell had a season high in tackles for loss totaling two TFLs for a total loss of nine yards.
· Jamon Hughes led the team for the second-straight game in tackles with eight, including seven solo stops.
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES
· Freshman Marcus Hightower made a 55-yard kickoff return at the end of the first quarter. It was a season-best for Hightower and the second-longest for the Tigers this season. The season high was a 59 return by Chris Hobbs against East Carolina. Hightower finished the game with 117 yards on four returns. It is his first career 100-yard return game, and the third 100-yard kickoff return by a Tiger this season.
· Senior Kevin Hubbard blocked a Trey Ragland punt in the fourth quarter that was recovered by Dasmine Cathey at the UAB 16. Memphis scored a TD two plays later. The blocked punt is the first of the season for Memphis and the second blocked kick of the year. Frank Trotter blocked a PAT earlier in the year against Southern Miss. Memphis' last blocked punt was also against UAB in 2008.
