Memphis, Tenn. - In a rematch of 2007 C-USA Championship Game, Lady Tigers struck first, but lost 2-1 in overtime battle to UCF Sunday afternoon. Memphis split the opening weekend of conference play at Mike Rose Soccer Complex bringing their 2008 record to 5-3-1 with a C-USA record of 1-1.
"It's very disappointing," commented head coach Brooks Monaghan on his team's loss in overtime. "It was a good game. It's a tough loss and our girls have to remember this one. As hard as it is, we have to put this one behind us and move on. We have another one on Friday."
In the second minute of the contest senior forward Kylie Hayes took a pass up the right side from Ashley Berra who was at midfield and put away her second goal of 2008. The goal would be the 39th goal of Hayes' illustrious career.
UCF's Katie Jackson scored in the 53rd minute of the game which would be the score that sent the game into overtime. With 2:06 left in the first overtime period a corner kick was taken by Katie Jackson on the left side and headed by Sarah DeLeon in the center of the box for the game winning goal.
"UCF is a good team and the same thing happened last year in overtime," said Monaghan. "I was so proud of our girls the way they were battling and tackling in the first half. I didn't think we quite matched it in the second half."
Memphis continues to face tough conference competition in their upcoming games on the road at UTEP and Colorado College. Both teams have only three losses and sit at the top half of the conference standings.
"It's a great conference," said Monaghan on the parody of C-USA competition. "There are a lot of very good teams in C-USA. I've said it a long time there are six or seven teams that I believe can win the conference, but I don't think anybody can go undefeated in league play.
Next weekend, the Lady Tigers head on their first C-USA road trip of three. Friday's game is at 8:00 p.m. (CST) is against 8-3-1 UTEP in El Paso, Texas. Sunday the Lady Tigers take on 7-3-1 Colorado College at 1:00 p.m. (CST) in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Memphis returns home on Friday, Oct. 10 at 7:00 p.m. for a battle with Houston. Sunday's game on Oct. 12 against Rice will be televised on The CBS College Sports Network. The kickoff will be at 12:00 p.m. (CST).
