Volleyball Sweeps Centenary

Led by 15 digs from Becky Shaffer and 14 from Christine Bach, a stifling Memphis defense held Centenary to a -.010 attack percentage to sweep the Ladies in its second win of the day at the 2008 Bulldog Club Invitational.
The Tigers also got three blocks from Emily Underwood and Casey Sines in holding CC to .034 and lower in the three sets. Centenary hit .034 in the opening frame, .023 in set two and -.100 in the final game of the day.
After routing the Ladies 25-15 in the first set, Memphis came out flat and trailed 6-1 after Centenary blocks on consecutive serves. The slow start forced Tiger head coach April Jauregui to take a timeout and her squad responded positively. Katlin Inglish hammered kills for the next two points and then came through with another kill to power an 11-4 run the put Memphis on top 12-10. Inglish, who had nine kills alone in the second set, struck again to give the Tigers a 16-13 lead, but they gave up the next three points let the Ladies back in the game at 16-16. Inglish led all players with 12 kills. The two teams fought through ties at 17, 20, 22, and 24 before Inglish connected to give the U of M a 24-23 lead. CC ended the set on an attack error.
Set three was close in the early going, before Centenary mistakes helped the Tigers to a 9-6 advantage. A pair of Memphis hitting errors cut its lead to 11-10, but that would be the last time the Ladies threatened and extension of the match. Memphis then scored the next eight points to take a commanding 19-10 cushion. The Tigers rounded the contest out with the 25-13 win. They outscored the Ladies 14-3 to end the set.
Memphis dominated Centenary in the first set outscored them 15-5 to end the set. With the Tigers leading by just one point at 15-14, Bach toed the service line. A pair of kills by Rebekah Strickland, followed by a termination by Inglish gave the U of M a four-point advantage at 18-14. Strickland downed 10 kills and hit .600 in the match. Centenary struggled with Bach's serve that then yielded two aces and an easy kill for Sines in a 9-0 push. The Ladies were assessed a delay of game penalty to end the game at 25-15.
With a 2-0 record in the tournament, Memphis will take on the host squad Mississippi State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
