MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's soccer team beat Ole Miss, 1-0, Friday, Sept. 21, at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. In front of over 400 fans, junior Kylie Hayes made the game winning goal with less than twenty seconds remaining in the match.
The Lady Tigers had just one shot on goal the entire night, and that was the game winner that gave Memphis the win. Near the end of the first half junior Emiko Schwab dipped through the defenders to give her self a path to the net, but was interrupted by the goalie who dived for the ball and saved it at the last minute
Freshman Vendula Strnadova created a path and nailed a shot to the high post, just missing the net with twenty minutes to go in the match.
"I was very pleased with the discipline of our players tonight, individually and as a team and that's what won us the game," said Coach Brooks Monaghan. "There were some great performances tonight, but overall it was a team effort. The number one thing that won us the game was their discipline tonight."
Senior Isabel Briones earned her 17th shutout of her career tonight against the Rebels. She made four saves in the match to help lead the Lady Tigers to a victory.
Hayes came into the match with just 1:20 seconds to go on the clock, for injured teammate freshman Melissa Smith. The game winning goal by Hayes was her second goal of the season, her 5th career game winner and the 28th goal of her career. Hayes is in the top five of every major career record category for the Lady Tigers including, points, goals and assists.
"I was very pleased with our performance tonight. It was a great win over a good team, like Ole Miss who is looked at around the country as a top-notch program," said Monaghan. "I'm very proud of them. We have another one on Sunday and now our focus is on Mississippi State."
The Lady Tigers are back in action again on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m., against the Mississippi State Bulldogs at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
