ORLANDO, Fla. - University of Memphis senior pitcher Jenna Kubesch retired the first 27-consecutive batters against East Carolina and carried a perfect game into the ninth at the Conference USA Softball Championship presented by Coca-Cola on Thursday at the UCF Softball Complex. But the Tigers (36-24) failed to score when the opportunities were given, losing 1-0 to the Pirates in 10 innings.
After giving up a leadoff home run to begin the U of M's first game of the day against Tulsa, Kubesch (24-11) threw 15 and 2/3 innings of hitless softball before allowing ECU it's first hit in the ninth. The Weimar, Texas, native struck out 12 in the game and didn't allow a walk.
Christina Merrida broke up the extra-inning perfect game with a two-out single to the right side. Charina Sumner then led off the 10th inning for the Pirates with a triple to right field and Kaui Tom followed with a walk-off single over the shortstop.
Memphis had several opportunities to advance past East Carolina, leaving six runners on base and three in scoring position. The Tigers began three-straight innings beginning with the fifth with a base hit. In the sixth Lindsey Pridgen led off the inning with a double to centerfield, but Memphis did not advance a runner to third.
C-USA Freshman of the Year Toni Paisley (20-5) earned the shutout victory for the Pirates, striking out eight with three hits and three walks.
The Tigers now need three-straight wins to advance to the championship game. However, the path will definitely not be easy. To get there, Memphis will have to start with a win against Marshall as the two teams meet on Friday at 12:30 p.m. (EST). The Thundering Herd swept a three-game series with the U of M in Huntington, W.Va., earlier this season. If Memphis can get past Marshall, the team will then have to beat No. 1 seeded Houston twice in the semifinals to advance to the championship game.
Friday's games can be followed live on the Internet with live stats through Gametracker and live audio through CSTV All-Access. Links to the broadcasts can be found at GoTigersGo.com.
