MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A day after earning his first Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors, senior righthander Ben Grisham was noted by the College Baseball Foundation as one of its weekly Players of the Week.
Grisham made his way to the CBF's weekly Honor Roll after stepping up for a thin Tiger pitching staff against the 29th-ranked Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Friday night. Normally Memphis' Saturday starter, Grisham was moved to the Friday night role for the series opener versus USM. The senior co-captain excelled, shutting Southern Miss out in a career-long outing of eight innings. In addition he struck out a career-best six batters and scattered five hits to pick up his first win of the year and help Memphis snap a five-game losing skid.
Grisham and senior second baseman Bill Moss were honored by C-USA on Monday as the senior co-captains swept the league's weekly awards. The sweep was the first for Memphis since Craig House was named Hitter and Pitcher of the Week on March 2, 1998.
Memphis went on to sweep the Golden Eagles for the first time since the 1999 season to produce recognition from Rivals.com as one of its five weekend surprises in college baseball.
