Memphis Head Coach Tommy West
"I thought we had a great atmosphere for the game. We certainly didn't start the way that we wanted to start, then we found a way to put ourselves back in the game at the half. The run defense was as poor a run defense as I have ever watched, ever anywhere. I don't know what to tell you, we are down, we're beat up at linebacker, we didn't tackle today."
"We're down, we're playing secondary players at linebacker and it is hard to do. Coming in we thought we could try to get them in to some second stuff where they would go back to throwing the ball, but they knew. They saw it coming in and that's why they came out. They're a four-wide team. They came in here and went pro, where we called twenty with two back tight ends and ran the ball. That's what I would do to us too. They saw it on tape.
"I thought we scored enough points to win the game, but I'm not sure we played well enough to win the game, because we left a lot out there on the first half. The third quarter did us in."
"We changed, we put five lineman in the game at certain times to try to do everything that we could do, and we got them stopped some in the first half, but then it started back. Once the ball got in the secondary we didn't do a good job in the box in the secondary and tried to tackle them. It kind of compounded on it. Defensively we didn't tackle. I can't say it's a bunch of errors, because defensively we just didn't tackle.
"I can't say that we played well enough offensively to win the game but I don't think we played well enough. We had the ball at the fifty twice, and got nothing and punted the ball."
East Carolina Head Coach Skip Holtz
"There were so many positive things that happened. I keep talking about the job that Todd Fitch and Steve Shankweiler and his offensive coaches have done. When we came into this season there were so many question marks and so many unknowns and so many young guys that needed to grow up so much. I am just so proud of them and the way they have developed offensively."
"They went out there and did some great things. The rushing game and what Chris Johnson did tonight was also really special. But, without a doubt there are some things that we have to sure up. We've got to prove a lot of things if we are going to get there."
"We had some younger guys that had to step in there. We lost (Chris) Mattocks and (Leon) Best right out of the shoot. Some of those weaknesses were exposed a little bit. But they are competing and they are playing hard. And that is all I can ask out of them. I don't think we will have any problem getting their attention for next week."
