Kenneth (KC) Griffin from Bartlett High School signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play men's college tennis at the University of Memphis beginning next fall. He is the first signee for the 2008-09 season for Head Coach Paul Goebel.
"KC will be a great student-athlete at the University of Memphis," Goebel said. "He comes from a fantastic family and we are so happy to have him staying in Memphis. He works very hard and is an excellent athlete. His game should continue to get better and better."
Griffin is currently the No. 40 ranked player in the USTA Southern Sectional Boys 18 standings. He sports a 62-31 mark in USTA play, and has already won the WellWorx Fall Junior Championship in September and the WellWorx Back to School Junior Classic back in August. That title came a month after he won the Tennis Memphis Junior Open and two months after he advanced to the consolation quarterfinals at the Southern Boys' 18 Closed tournament in June.
In doubles, Griffin teamed with George Watson to win the Tennessee State Qualifier, before falling in the consolation semifinals of the same tournament. As a high school junior, Griffin was a consolation quarterfinalist at the BullFrog USTA Southern Sectionals in April.
TennisRecruiting.net has Griffin as the No. 4 ranked senior in Tennessee and the No. 2 senior in the Memphis area. That same serve has Griffin ranked as the No. 77 senior in the Southeastern United States. A three-star recruit with TennisRecruiting.net, Griffin becomes the third signee from the state of Tennessee on the Memphis roster. He will join Chattanooga's Charlie Ramsay (McCallie), and Memphis' Spencer Heflin (MUS) on the roster for 2008-09.
Griffin was a Memphis Commercial Appeal Best of Preps boys' tennis finalist at the end of last season.
Griffin will replace graduating seniors Amrit Narasimhan and Jimmy Khougassian for Memphis next season. He was also considering Alabama for his college tennis career.
