BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Sophomore Emily Malinowski took home the best finish of any Tiger or Lady Tiger runner at the Western Kentucky Old Timer Invitational on Saturday. The meet was the first for the newly combined Memphis cross country program, led by head coach Kevin Robinson and assistant cross country and distance coach Mike Power.
Malinowski finished 14th overall in the women's 5k with a time of 18.51. Finishing second for the Lady Tigers and 25th overall was Memphis senior Mary Claire Dake, who timed in at 20.04.
Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Tigers on the day were seniors Rebecca McMahon and Kimberly McVeigh and junior Ashley Stewart, who put together strong showings to finish 32nd and 45th and 64th, respectively, in times of 20.30, 21.25 and 27.45.
On the men's side, Memphis was led by Geoff Standen, who turned in a time of 29.21 in the men's 5-mile for a 29th place finish.
Also competing for Tigers on Saturday were Avi Shaposhnik, Juan Arboleda, Nick Bussey, and Sam James, who finished 35th, 38th, 51st and 52nd respectively.
"I think we ran well today," said Power. "Obviously, I think we have a lot of room for improvement, and we'll continue to work toward our best times as the season progresses."
The Tiger and Lady Tiger cross country teams will be in action again next Saturday when they travel to Little Rock, Ark. for the UALR Open.
