LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Sophomore Emily Malinowski took home a second place overall finish on the women's side to lead the Lady Tiger cross country team to a fifth place finish at the UALR Open on Saturday. The men's team also finished fifth.
"Overall, we ran much better today," said Memphis cross-country coach Mike Power. "I think the guys improved a lot and really got their heads into the race. The women still have a little more to work on, but if we continue to improve we'll be ready for the conference meet."
Malinowski, who led the Lady Tigers last week, finished second overall in the women's 5k Saturday with a time of 19:04. The finish was the best of her career. Memphis senior Mary Claire Dake was the second Lady Tiger to finish, posting a time of 20:12 and an 11th place finish. Becca McMahon ended just behind Dake at 17th with a time of 20:54.
Kimberly McVeigh, Erika Morris and Ashley Stewart finished 27th, 34th and 40th with times of 22:04, 24:46 and 26:15 respectively.
Juan Arboleda led the men's team Saturday with a 13th place overall finish and a time of 28:28. He was closely followed by sophomore Geoff Standen, who brought home an 18th place finish in the men's 8k, posting a time of 28:44.
Senior Avi Shaposhnik finished with a time of 29:30 and placed 21st. Nick Bussey and Sam James rounded out the Tiger runners, finishing 30th and 31st respectively.
"I'm not at all disappointed with the way we've run so far this year," said Power. "It's still very early in the season. We need to focus on running better each week, and then we'll be ready for the conference."
