MEMPHIS, TENN. - University of Memphis offensive lineman Blake Butler was added late yesterday to the Magnolia Gridiron All-Star Classic hosted at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, Miss., on December 23, 2006. Game time is slated for noon. Butler joins punter Michael Gibson and defensive back Brandon McDonald, who were also invited to play in the senior event.
The Magnolia Gridiron Classic is a college all-star football game played in a 1-A verses 1-AA format. Scouts from every NFL and CFL team attend the week of practices to evaluate the talent of the 100 seniors representing colleges from across the nation for the upcoming draft. Former Mississippi State head coach Jackie Sherrill will be the honorary coach for the 1-A squad against former Jackson State coach W.C. Gorden, who will be the honorary coach for the 1-AA team.
Tickets are available through the box office at 601-354-6021 or on-line at www.ms-veteransstadium.com. Advance tickets are $12/$20/$25 and tickets purchased on game day are $15/$25/$30.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Butler started all 12 games this season and was part of an offensive line that allowed only 14 sacks in 2006, which tied for the C-USA lead. He ends his career having started 34 of his 49 games and participating in over 2700 offensive plays. Butler was selected as the team's Offensive Lineman of the Year at the post-season banquet and was named to the All-Conference USA squad.
