Memphis took game one 30-20, but 27 kills from 2006 Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year Kelly-Anne Billingy combined with 17 Tiger service errors eventually proved to be too much to overcome as Memphis fell to Marshall 3-1 in league action Friday night.
The Memphis offense was led by 13 kills from Melissa Nance. Ashley Liford and Shelby Burton downed 12 and 11 kills each. The Tigers defense got a match-high 17 kills from Christen Clayton. Led by four blocks from Burton and three from Laura Côté and Sarah Bury, Memphis outblocked Marshall 9-5. Côté stuffed the stat sheet, adding a match-high 48 assists, seven kills and seven digs to her three blocks.
The Tigers look to bounce back on Sunday, when they face East Carolina at 1 p.m.
