The Tiger Football team will host the Tulsa Golden Hurricane this weekend for its Homecoming game on Saturday. The game will be broadcast by CSTV with Tom Hart and Chris Rix providing the commentary. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
Fans are asked to bring old cell phones to the game as they will be collected at each gate, and later donated to HopeLine, benefiting victims of domestic violence. The first 7,000 fans will also receive "rally towels", which will be distributed at various gates.
It took until mid-October, but the Tigers finally host their Conference USA home opener this Saturday when Tulsa comes to the Liberty Bowl. Memphis is the last team in Conference USA to play a home league contest.
Memphis was one of only three Conference USA teams to begin league play with two road contests (at East Carolina, at UAB). SMU and Southern Miss were the other two league teams to open conference play with two-straight road games. The Mustangs and Golden Eagles both played their C-USA home openers last weekend.
Saturday's contest will be the 22nd meeting between Memphis and Tulsa. Last year's meeting was the first between the two schools since 1995. The Tigers and Golden Hurricane played every season from 1990-95. Memphis holds a 14-7 all-time series lead and has won six of the last nine encounters. The Golden Hurricance took last year's game, posting a thrilling 37-31 overtime victory in Tulsa. The Tigers' last victory in the series was a narrow 10-7 win over Tulsa in 1995. That game was played in Memphis.
The Tigers hold a 6-2 series advantage in games played in the Bluff City. Tulsa has won two of the last three encounters played at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
ON THIS DATE: The Tigers are 7-7 when they play on Oct. 21 in the program's history. Memphis has lost its last four Oct. 21 contests since 1978. The last time the Tigers posted a win when playing on Oct. 21 was the 1972 campaign. Memphis defeated North Texas State 7-6.
A CLOSE SERIES: While Memphis may hold a 14-7 series lead, the wins for both teams have been hard fought ones. Of the 21 games in the series, 10 have been decided by single digits, and the average margin of victory in those 10 games is 4.4 points. To take it further, five more contests were decided by less than two touchdowns. The average margin of victory in the 21-game series is 12.1 points. Of the eight games played in Memphis, five were decided by single digits. In the last four encounters played in the Bluff City, the average margin of victory is 4.5 points.
MEMPHIS USUALLY FARES WELL ON CSTV: The 2005 season marked a new partnership with CSTV, and the Tigers appeared live on the network five times, boasting a 5-0 record. The televised games in 2005 were - UTEP, Houston, ECU, USM and Marshall.
