MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis basketball coach John Calipari met with freshman reserve center Kareem Cooper on Monday evening to gather additional information about a weekend arrest in Millington, Tennessee. As a result of the meeting, Cooper has been suspended from competing for the Tiger basketball team until further notice.
"I believe that Kareem understands the enormity of the situation and is very sorry for what he did," said Calipari. "He knows that he is being held responsible for his actions and the effect this incident has had on our team. He realizes that his actions are totally unacceptable for any member of our team.
"We will always try to be firm, yet fair in the discipline of our squad," Calipari stated. "We will always try to do what I think is in the best interest of the University, the team and the individual involved and hopefully, the punishment will be for the betterment of the student-athlete. Therefore, I am going to suspend Kareem until further notice and his other required sanctions will be handled internally."
Cooper had appeared in 14 games for the Tigers this season, averaging 4.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per outing.
