GAINESVILLE, Fla. - When the Memphis women's cross country team concluded the 2005 season Saturday in Gainesville, it did so on a high note, as the squad finished 11th out of 24 teams at the NCAA South Regional Championships to claim the highest-ever team finish for the U of M at the regional meet. Junior Daniele Riendeau also picked up the highest-ever individual showing for the Lady Tigers with her 21st-place finish.
As usual, Memphis got a strong performance out of Riendeau, who finished the 6K course in a time of 21:36 to lead the scoring.
However, the largest impact likely came from the second through fifth runners who each set a personal-best time to propel the Lady Tigers to the record finish.
Freshman Emily Malinowski again finished in the second team position, but moved closer to Riendeau, as she covered the course in a time of 22:03 to finish 29th. The tally marked the seventh time in eight meets that the Slingerlands, N.Y. native has set a personal record.
Junior Mary Claire Dake, who moved back into the third team position after finishing in the fourth spot the past two races, finished 88th overall with a personal-record time of 23:19 to put up her strongest race of the season.
Freshmen Meghan Shinkwin and Carolyn Corbett crossed the line just behind Dake, finishing 98th and 104th, respectively, to round out the scoring for the U of M. Shinkwin posted a new personal best of 23:32, while Corbett set a new PR with a time of 23:39.
"I couldn't have been happier with the way we ran," said Coach Jonas Holdeman. "We performed very well as a team, especially our two, three, four and five runners. That's why we were able to get the result we did."
The 11th-place team finish was the U of M's highest by seven spots, besting last year's 18th-place tally.
Riendeau and Malinowski both finished higher than any previous Memphis individual. The highest prior tally had been Riendeau's 41st-place finish at last year's meet.
The South Regional meet, which was hosted by the University of Florida, wraps up the 2005 cross country season for the U of M. The Tigers will now set their sights on the indoor track and field season, which is set to begin Saturday, December 3, at the ASU Kickoff Klassic in Jonesboro, Ark.
