MEMPHIS, TENN. - The University of Memphis received welcome news this morning as the Tigers were placed 25th in the Associated Press football poll. Memphis has opened the season at 2-0 with wins over Ole Miss and Chattanooga.
Memphis also opened the 2003 season at 2-0, and this makes only the second time since 1960 and 1961 that the Tigers have opened at 2-0 in back-to-back years.
There is one other instance in Tiger football history that they were ranked by a national news organization. In 1963, the Tiger ended the year with a 9-0-1 record and were ranked 14th in the final poll produced by United Press International.
The Tigers will travel to Jonesboro, Ark., this weekend for a 6 p.m. matchup with Arkansas State on Saturday. Memphis opens C-USA action at UAB on Sept. 25.
