MEMPHIS, Tenn. - University of Memphis volleyball coach Carrie Yerty announced the hiring of former Memphis standout April Harriman as an assistant coach on the Tiger Volleyball staff.
Harriman, who brings four years of college coaching experience to the program, has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach for former Tiger assistant Fiona Simmons at Lamar University.
"I am excited to return to my alma mater as a coach," Harriman said. "I have a great amount of respect for everyone involved with this program and am excited to get the opportunity to work with this administration and staff."
A star outside hitter for the Tigers from 1997-2000, Harriman garnered numerous honors in her career, including 2000 Academic All-District First team and 2000 Second team Verizon Academic All-American accolades. She amassed 494 kills as a senior at Memphis, which ranks ninth on the program's single season kills list. She received the Elma Roane Award as Memphis' top female athlete in 2000. The Los Angeles native ranks 15th all-time in Memphis history with 1,017 kills. She is just one of three U of M volleyball players ever to record 30 kills in a match, slamming 30 kills in a match against CBU in 2000. She posted six 20-plus kill performances in her as a Tiger.
A standout both on the court and in the classroom, she was an eight time Dean's list student and also earned 2000 Female Student-Athlete of the Year at Memphis. Harriman was also a four-time recipient of the Conference USA Commissioner's Medal while at the U of M.
"I am very excited to have April back in the program" said Yerty. "She is a fiery competitor and has a great knowledge of the game. She also has invaluable recruiting experience which I think will elevate our program."
Prior to her two-year stint at Lamar, Harriman spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio University. She served as a volunteer assistant in her first season before being taking the full-time assistant post in 2002. Harriman has also coached four years of club volleyball and served as an instructor at several university camps.
Harriman graduated from the University of Memphis Summa Cum Laude in 2001 with degrees in communication and political science. She completed requirements for her master's degree in organizational communication at Ohio University in the spring of 2002.
