Memphis Places Six On All-Conference USA Team

The University of Memphis placed six players on the 2001 All-Conference USA squads that were announced on December 5th. The group includes three on the All-Conference USA team and three on the C-USA All-Freshman unit.
Memphis placed two players on the first team All C-USA squad and one on second team. Senior offensive tackle Artis Hicks was a first team selection, as was junior free safety Glenn Sumter. Sumter led the conference in interceptions and set a new Memphis record for tackles by a defensive back with 137. Junior tailback Dante Brown was named second team All C-USA as a running back after amassing over 900 yards rushing in 2001.
The Tigers also landed three players on this year's All-Freshman squad. Wide receiver Darron White and offensive center Drew Harmon were named to the All-Freshman offensive unit, while punter James Gaither was selected as the league's best freshman punter. White had 34 pass receptions for 422 yards and three touchdowns for the Tigers in 2001. Gaither served as the team's punter this past season and averaged 40.6 yards per punt on 67 kicks.
