Memphis Defeats Murray State, 3-1

MEMPHIS, TENN. - The University of Memphis Tiger volleyball team improved to 17-5 on the year with wins over Jackson State and Murray State in The U of M Tri-Match here Tuesday.
The Tigers opened the day, defeating Jackson State, 3-0. Memphis won the match by game scores of 30-17, 30-12 and 30-10. Memphis then came back later that evening to defeat Murray State, 3-1, by game scores of 30-17, 20-30, 30-28 and 30-24. MSU had defeated JSU, 3-0, in between the two Memphis matches.
"I was very proud of the way we played as a team today," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "I am glad that we were able to snap our losing streak and that we were able to finish up our long home stand on a positive note. We are going to have to focus and be ready to play this weekend when we head out on the road. I am just so proud of what this team has been able to accomplish this season."
In the early match, Memphis' serve was no match for JSU as the Tigers totaled a season-high 18 service aces in the match, which ranks as the third-best match total in Conference USA. Senior Adrianne Edmonds led with six aces, followed by Amie Hamilton and Emily Eichmann's four aces. Everyone who serves during the match for the Tigers recorded an ace.
Garrett led the Tigers in kills versus JSU with 13 and a .524 hitting percentage. Shella Neba followed Garrett with eight kills, while Brooke Chrisman, Eichmann, Brittany Barnett and Tiara Gilkey all totaled seven kills apiece. Edmonds and Hamilton led Memphis in digs with nine apiece. Hamilton and freshman Heather Watts shared the setting duties as Hamilton totaled 16 assists and Watts recorded 27 assists.
Memphis outhit JSU in the match with a .400 hitting mark. JSU totaled 16 kills and 17 errors in 88 attempts for a -.011 hitting clip. Angela Carter and Keesheama Richardson led JSU's offensive attempt with six kills apiece. LaTasha Pusha led JSU in digs with 12.
Later in the evening, Edmonds led Memphis in hitting against MSU with 21 kills and a .263 hitting mark. She also totaled seven digs, two service aces and five assisted blocks in the win over the Racers. Eichmann and Garrett also totaled double digit kills versus Murray St. with 16 and 15, respectively. Hamilton, who powered the offense with 54 assists, also led the squad in digs with 21 and in service aces with three. Garrett also totaled double figure digs with 12.
Kim Cappa led MSU in hitting with 28 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. She was also one of five Racers to record double digit digs with 10. Trena Fish followed Cappa with 15 kills. Jessica Wood was all over the court and recorded a team-hgih 20 digs.
The Tigers head back into Conference USA action this weekend when they travel to Marquette on Friday and DePaul on Saturday. Memphis' next home match will be Nov. 2 against South Florida.
