Apr 16, 2000 | Baseball
Louiville, Ky.
Memphis brought out the bats early by scoring six runs in the second inning. In the third, the offensive production doubled. Memphis set three team single inning records and tied a fourth. The Tigers set new single inning records for at-bats in an inning (13), runs in an inning (12), and plate appearances in an inning (17). Memphis also tied the school record for hits in an inning with 10. When the dust cleared, Memphis led the Cardinals 18-2 at the end of three innings.
Louisville spread out their offense much more than the Tigers. The Cardinals added one run each in the second, third, and fourth innings off of Tiger starter Jarod Wilson. Then in the fifth, the Cardinals put up four runs to force Wilson out of the game before he could get credit for the win. Memphis used three relievers in the final 4.1 innings to secure the victory, which was credited to Sean Carlson, who went 1.2 innings to gain his first win of the season. The Tigers took the series 2-1 to maintain a record of over .500 in C-USA and remain in the top half of the standings.
For Memphis, starter Jarod Wilson went 4.2 innings, giving up six hits and six earned runs before being followed by a combined effort from Nick Rogers, Jason Carter, Andy Whitten, and Sean Carlson. The Cardinals used seven pitchers on the day, and the starter, Sean Green (0-6) was credited with the loss.
Memphis was led offensively by Stephen Frix, who drove in five runs on 2-6 from the plate. Henry Castor went 3-5 with one RBI and three runs scored, and Craig Hopkins was 2-3 with three RBI. Nate Sams was also 2-3 and scored three runs for the Tigers.
The Cardinals put three runs on the board in the sixth and four in the eighth to draw closer to Memphis, but the Tiger lead proved to be insurmountable, and the Tigers finished the series with a 21-14 win.
Memphis returns home to face Murray State at Nat Buring on Tuesday evening at 6:00 before travelling to Jonesboro, Arkansas on Wednesday to face Arkansas State.
