Louisville, Ky. - One of the most difficult things to overcome in baseball is a pitcher who is hitting his peak. The Memphis Tigers (12-23, 6-6) ran into just that Friday evening in Louisville's Brian Brantley, who went nine full innings and struck out ten in a Louisville 7-1 victory in game one of a three game series.
Brantley was a buzzsaw, but the Tigers looked like they were going to handle him early. In the top of the second inning, Jonathan Leicester walked and was knocked in from second on a hard single up the middle by Craig Hopkins. That would be all of the offense on the night.
The Cardinals (11-23-1, 4-7-1) put nine hits and seven runs on the board to support Bentley's pitching performance. Troy Hilpp went 3-4 with two runs scored and one RBI, and Morgan Bojorquez was also 3-4, and only a double short of hitting for the cycle. Kyle Rajsich added a home run and two RBI, and Josh Rhodes hit two RBI, as well.
For Memphis, Jonathan Leicester went three innings in picking up his eighth loss of the season, and Layne Dawson and Andy Whitten appeared in relief for the Tigers. Paul Reuer went 2-5, and Craig Hopkins was 1-3 with an RBI for the Tigers.
Memphis faces Louisville again on Saturday and Sunday afternoons for 12:00 games each day. Jason Wiedmeyer is the probable starter for tomorrow's game as the Tigers seek to even up the series going into Sunday.
