Tigers Take Southern Miss To Overtime

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - David Wall scored 12 points Saturday as Southern Mississippi defeated Memphis 79-73 in overtime.
Memphis sent the game into overtime with a tip-in by Kelly Wise on an inbounds play with 0.4 seconds left in regulation.
But in overtime, the Golden Eagles (14-8, 4-6 Conference USA) hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to seal the game.
In addition to Wall's 12, Mel Cauthen and Earl Flowers had 11 each, while Kilavorus Thompson, Mario Myles and Vandarel Jones had 10 apiece.
Wise led Memphis (9-14, 2-8) with 21 while forward Shannon Forman added 17. Courtney Trask finished with 13, including 10 in the first half.
After being tied 37-37 at the half, neither team held a big advantage in the second period. Memphis managed a 4-point lead, while Southern Mississippi's biggest lead in the second half was 3 points.
The Golden Eagles' 3-point lead came with 1:50 left in regulation when Vandarel Jones scored inside for a 64-61 lead.
Memphis trailed 66-64 and had the ball out of bounds with 0.4 seconds left. Paris London lofted the inbounds pass to Wise who tipped it in as the horn sounded sending the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Southern Mississippi led by as many as 7 points (78-71 with 27.5 seconds left) and coasted to the victory.
Neither team shot well. Southern Mississippi hit 39.1 percent from the field while Memphis did only slightly better at 39.4 percent.
Southern Mississippi outrebounded Memphis 51-33.
