Murray, Kent.-- - The University of Memphis volleyball team (7-14, 0-8) needed everything they had, including Amie Hamilton's foot, to snap a six-match losing streak at Murray State University, Tuesday,
Hamilton opened game four digging a ball from the floor with her foot. The continued play resulted in a Memphis block and a side-out to start the fourth game. That was indicative of the entire match, as both teams battled service errors (29 between the two squads), and struggled with hitting percentage (neither team hit above .200) in a non-conference match, Tuesday. At one point, Memphis was down 11-5 in the fourth.
Game one went to Memphis, 15-13, after Murray State battled back from 11-4 down to tie the game on a Memphis blocking error, 12-12. The Memphis blocking game stepped up to post two blocks on serve to finish game one with the win.
Game two was another tight match, which fell to the Racers, 16-14. Murray State was up 8-6 when the Tigers scored four consecutive points on Emily Eichmann's serve to go up 11-9. MSU rallied back on a Memphis attack error and a tip to the line for a kill to go up 13-11. Five side-outs later, the Racers two kills and a Memphis block that went out of bounds sealed the MSU game two victory.
Game three went back to the Tigers. A 5-0 Memphis run to start the match put the game out of reach for MSU. Junior Ginger Garrett led the Tigers with 15 kills, while April Harriman and Eichmann added 15 and 14, respectively. Harriman played one of her biggest defensive games of the season, bringing up 21 digs to lead the Tigers. Four Tigers posted double digit digs, including Amie Hamilton (14), Garrett (10) and Eichmann (14). Eichmann posted her second consecutive double-double (kills-digs) after posting her first career double-double at Cincinnati, Sunday.
The Tigers' road trip travels back to conference play at Saint Louis at 7 p.m., Friday. The Tigers will return to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse to host Charlotte, Sunday at 2 p.m.
