Two Tigers Selected In MLB Draft

Tiger baseball pitchers Josh Stewart (Ledbetter, Ky. / Livingston Central HS) and Craig House (Memphis, Tenn. / Christian Brothers HS) were selected in the 1999 June amateur draft this past week.
Stewart was selected in the fifth round by the Chicago White Sox with the 159th overall pick in the draft. This past season, Stewart, a junior, posted a 7-4 record with a 3.70 ERA. He struck out a career-high 84 batters in 90.0 innings of work. The southpaw was twice named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week and earned second team all-conference honors.
Stewart was the first player chosen from a Conference USA school in this year's draft.
House was selected in the 12th round by the Colorado Rockies with the 370th overall pick in the draft. In his senior season, House compiled an 8-4 record with a 4.08 ERA. The right-handed hurler made 13 starts and had four complete games, including one shutout. He fanned 112 batters in 92.2 innings, the second highest single-season strikeout total in school history. On March 1, House was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week and Collegiate Baseball's National Player of the Week. At the conclusion of the season he earned first-team all-conference honors as a pitcher and as a designated hitter.
House finished his four-year Tiger career as Memphis' all-time strikeout leader with 303.
The University of Memphis baseball team posted a 28-26-1 overall record in 1999.
