LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Marcus Moody and Earl Barron scored 17 points apiece, and Memphis had its first decent shooting game of the season Wednesday in an 83-65 victory over Chaminade in the seventh-place game of the Maui Invitational.
The win was the first in three games for interim head coach Johnny Jones, who took over the team on Nov. 13, after the unexpected resignation of coach Tic Price.
Barron, a freshman center, had 11 rebounds, while Moody, a junior guard, had 10.
The Tigers (1-2) shot 31 percent over the first two games, losses to Georgetown and Southern California, but picked that up to 50 percent (27-for-54) against Chaminade, the Division II host school for the eight-team tournament.
Two other starters - Keiron Shine with 15 points and Paris London with 11 - scored in double figures for Memphis, a far cry from the first two games when the starters combined for a total of 51 points.
Memphis went up 51-35 with 16:12 to play on two free throws by Courtney Trask, but the Silverswords (0-3) got back within five points twice, the last time on at 63-58 on two free throws by Stanley Martin with 8:15 to play.
Trask then hit a 3-pointer and Barron added two free throws to start a 20-7 run to close the game.
Martin, a transfer from Hofstra, had 19 points for the Silverswords, who also lost to No. 22 Purdue and Utah State, while Kaweo Feeney had 14 and Marcus Murphy 13.
The loss dropped Chaminade's record in the 16 years of the tournament to 3-43. The Silverswords' last tournament win was in 1992, a double-overtime victory over Stanford in the seventh-place game.
Memphis starting center Kelly Wise did not make the trip with the team to concentrate on academics.
