Sam Hindsman came to then West Tennessee State Teachers College in the fall of 1939 and would become a standout in both football and basketball. Playing for former coach Cecil C. Humphreys, the Columbus, Mississippi, native holds the distinction of scoring the Tigers first ever points against Ole Miss during the 1939 season. In 1940, Hindsman led the team in scoring. He opened the season scoring two touchdowns in the win over Austin Peay. Three weeks later he scored both of the team’s touchdowns in WTSTC’s 14-7 win over Middle Tennessee State. Hindsman would also added touchdowns against Murray State and Ole Miss during the 1940 campaign. As the captain of the basketball team, Hindsman, a center, gained fame with his defensive effort in the post against the defending World Champion Boston Celtics in an exhibition game in Memphis. The Celtics won the game 48-43. Hindsman served as the vice-president of the Letterman’s Club in 1940.
