Maurice Knight, a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, came to Memphis in 1968 and was a member of the Tigers’ NCAA National Champion 440-relay team. He lettered for four years as a sprinter for the Memphis track team and in 1973 joined with Lynn Fox, Everett Taylor and Ed Hammonds to win the NCAA 440-relay. Upon his graduation from then Memphis State in 1973, Knight held the Tiger indoor record for the 60-yard low hurdles at 6.7 seconds and the 50-yard intermediate hurdles at 6.1 seconds. He held the outdoor record in the long jump at 25’2” and the 440 relay record at 39.6 seconds. Knight joined the coaching staff at East High School after graduation and later became the Mustang’s head football coach. He was hired by Memphis head football coach Chuck Stobart in the spring of 1993 and remained at Memphis until 1997.
