John Mohondro
- Induction:
- 2003
One of the best distance runners in Tiger track history, John Mohundro arrived at the University of Memphis in 1968 and ran for track coaches Larry Wright and Glenn Hays during his career.
A state champion in the mile and in cross country at Overton High School, Mohundro lettered for four years at Memphis in track. He won the Missouri Valley Conference championship in the indoor mile as a sophomore and participated in the NCAA Cross Country Championships as a senior. When his career at the University of Memphis was completed, Mohundro held the Tiger record for the indoor mile with a time of 4:13.4 and was also the owner of the record in the two-mile run with a 9:01.0.
After receiving his degree from the University in 1980, Mohundro began teaching in the Memphis City School System, but he never gave up his love for running. He entered and won virtually every road race in Memphis and the surrounding areas over a ten-year span and has over the years logged more than 84,108 miles as a runner.
From 1980 through 1986, Mohundro won six of the seven Oak Hall Run for St. Jude events and later extended his distance to add the championship of the First Tennessee Memphis Marathon.
He worked for FedEx and he and his wife, Pam, live in Southaven, MS.
