Jack Butcher, who graduated from then Memphis State University in 1957, was a stellar basketball guard for the Tigers and helped lead his 1957 team to the finals of the NIT in New York. He came to the Tigers in the fall of 1951 and after two seasons, entered the United States Army. After two years in service, Butcher returned to the University and played his final two seasons, graduating in 1957. He averaged 11.0 points per game as a sophomore, appearing in 23 contests. As a senior, the Loogootee, Indiana, native tallied 339 points and ended his Tiger career with 696 points and a 7.6 point per game average. Following graduation, Butcher was drafted in the 10th round by the Boston Celtics and later began one of the greatest coaching careers in Indiana High School basketball history. Coaching and teaching at Loogootee High School, Butcher compiled an overall record of 693-197, making him the fifth winningest coach in Indiana prep history. Since his induction into the Hall of fame, Butcher has become the winningest prep coach in Indiana history.
