Francis “Bubba” Winkler, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, prepped at Catholic High School before signing a football scholarship with former head coach Billy J. Murphy in 1964. He played defensive tackle for the Tigers from 1964 through 1967 and was a major factor in Memphis State’s first ever win against the Ole Miss Rebels in 1967. After leading the defensive unit for four years, Winkler was drafted by and played for the Green Bay Packers under legendary head coach Vince Lombardi. Following his professional football career, Winkler returned to Memphis and entered the law enforcement field. He became a detective for the Shelby County Sheriffs Department and was in charge of the Sheriffs Frontline Against Drugs program. Winkler has served as the president of the Memphis Chapter of the NFL’s Former Player Association.
