Andy Settles came to then Memphis State College in the fall of 1947 as a transfer from the University of Tennessee. He had also attended the University of North Carolina prior to coming to the Tigers. A native of Lenoir City, Tennessee, Settles played both offensive and defensive end for former head coach Ralph Hatley. He lettered for two seasons, 1947 and 1948 and helped the Tigers to a 6-2-1 record in the school’s first season of competitive football since the end of World War II. The ‘47 squad outscored its opponents 238-60. During the 1948 campaign, Settles had a 40-yard pass reception against Pensacola Navy and was called a “defensive stalwart” in the Louisiana Tech game. His 30-yard touchdown reception against Union University in ‘48 helped Memphis win its homecoming contest 21-0. Settles lettered for two season and served as president of the M Letterman’s Club in 1948. He received his BS degree in Biology in the spring of 1949 and earned his master’s degree in 1952. He had a long career in financial planning and started Creative Retirement Planning.
