Alex Kline arrives at Memphis after spending the past three seasons at the University of Akron in a variety of roles. Most recently, Kline held the position of wide receiver coach and recruiting coordinator for the 2021 season.
Akron’s wide receivers were extremely productive for the Zips as part of an offense that finished third in the Mid-American Conference in passing efficiency. Both Konata Mumpfield and Michael Mathison who played wide receiver under Kline, earned MAC All-Conference Honors. Mumpfield even received Freshman All-American honors for his performance throughout the 2021 season. Before being elevated to wide receiver coach and recruiting coordinator, Kline was the interim tight ends coach and director of player personnel and recruiting for the Akron Zips.
Kline arrived in Akron in 2019 after a successful 2018 season with the University of Pittsburgh football program. He served as an offensive quality control coach working with the quarterbacks, which included eventual Heisman Trophy finalist Kenny Pickett. At Pitt, the Panthers won the ACC Coastal Conference division title during the 2018 season.
Before Pitt, Kline started his coaching career at Saint Vincent College, a division III program in Latrobe, Pa. He served as the program’s offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the 2016 and 2017 seasons after serving as a graduate assistant the two years prior.
An offensive coordinator at Saint Vincent, Kline’s offense was responsible for over nine school records and ranked in the top 50 nationally in four categories including passing yards per game, passing efficiency, red zone offense and completion percentage.
Kline played wide receiver collegiately at John Carroll University under former head coach Tom Arth, now with the Los Angeles Chargers, from 2010-2013. Â As a player he was voted as an all-conference wide receiver, unanimous team captain, most valuable wide receiver as voted on by teammates and part of the Leadership Council.
