Andy Pennington

Andy Pennington joined the Memphis men’s basketball program as Director of Analytics prior to the 2023-24 season.
He comes to Memphis after most recently serving as assistant coach at Alabama-Huntsville during 2022-23. He helped lead the Chargers to a 27-8 record and an appearance in the South Regional Final of the Division II NCAA Tournament.
UAH finished second in the nation with 384 made three-pointers, led by Luke Burnett’s school record 108 triples. Under Pennington’s tutelage, Chaney Johnson earned the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year and was named NABC first team All-South Region. His squad also finished second in the conference in three-point percentage (38.0), and fourth in scoring (76.2) and field goal percentage (46.5).
Prior to UAH, Pennington served as head coach at Sequoyah High School in Madisonville, Tennessee, where he accumulated a career record of 56-59. He took over the position after six-straight losing seasons and posted records of 16-11 in 2020-21 and 18-11 in 2021-22.
His teams own three of the TSSAA’s top 10 single-game records for three-pointers made with 18, 19 and 20.
Pennington previously served as assistant coach at Alcoa High School in Alcoa, Tennessee, with a 90-37 overall record that included a pair of state tournament appearances, including a TSSAA Final Four berth in 2000. His teams also won Region, District and Sub-State Championships in 2000 and 2001.
He has additional experience guiding squads at the AAU level, including the Tennessee Travelers 15U (Newport, Tenn.), the Bmaze Elite UAA 16U (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Pro One Basketball Club (Huntsville, Ala.).
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Pennington played collegiately at Carson-Newman from 1995-97 as well as East Tennessee State from 1992-95.
He also had a storied high school career at Madisonville High School in Madisonville, Tennessee, where he is the all-time leading scorer with 2,864 points and finished his career with 372 three-pointers to rank seventh amongst Tennessee varsity players. He holds the MHS single-game scoring record with 55 points and was a 2-time All-State Class AA selection.
Pennington is from Madisonville, Tennessee. He and his wife Renee have five children: Blake, Kaylen, Dane, Dax and Demi.
