David Glidden enters his second season as the wide receivers coach at Memphis after serving as the tight ends coach in 2020. Prior to that, he spent two years as an offensive quality control analyst for the Tigers.
In 2022, Glidden helped guide the Tigers to a 38-10 victory over Utah State in the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl. Memphis finished the season ranked fifth in the nation in fewest penalties (53), 21st in passing offense (279.2) and 22nd in scoring offense (35.3).
In 2021, Glidden helped the Tigers to the program’s eighth-straight bowl appearance, as the team was named EasyPost Hawai’i Bowl champions after Hawai’i withdrew from the game. For his effort, Glidden was named to 247Sports’ 30Under30 List.
Under Glidden, Calvin Austin III was unanimously named First-Team All-AAC, one of just three players in the conference unanimously chosen. Austin III led the conference in receiving yards per game (95.8) and finished second in the AAC in receiving yards (1,149) and fourth in receptions per game (6.2). On the year, he totaled 74 receptions for 1,149 yards and eight touchdowns. Austin III is the first wide receiver in program history to earn first-team all-conference honors in back-to-back seasons.
Â
Austin III’s 1,149 receiving yards rank fifth on the program’s single-season list, while his eight touchdowns tied for 11th. He also posted two of the top-five single-game receiving yards performances in school history in 2021. His 239 yards at Arkansas State rank second all-time, while his 200 at Tulsa rank fifth.
"We are excited to announce that David Glidden, who is entering his fourth season on staff, is now coaching our wide receivers," said head coach Ryan Silverfield prior to the 2021 campaign. "He is dynamic coach and highly regarded amongst our players."Â
Serving as the tight ends coach in 2020, Glidden helped Memphis rank 22nd in the nation in total offense (453.1) and 17th in both passing offense (307.9) and first down offense (260).
Tight end Sean Dykes earned Honorable-Mention All-American Athletic Conference honors after posting 47 catches for 581 yards and seven touchdowns.
Â
A 2015 graduate of Oklahoma State, Glidden suited up for four seasons for the Cowboys, finishing his career with 115 catches for 1,655 yards and six touchdowns.  He spent some time with the Atlanta Falcons before moving in to coaching.Â
Â
He spent two seasons as an assistant coach at his high school alma mater, Mustang High School (Okla.), before coming to Memphis in 2018. He worked as a member of the offensive staff with the Tigers the past two seasons helping in the development of the Memphis wide receivers. Wideouts Damonte Coxie and Antonio Gibson each earned all-conference honors in 2019 and Coxie has back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons, with 148 catches for 2,450 yards in the past two seasons with 16 touchdowns.Â
Â
With Glidden on the staff, Memphis won back-to-back West Division Championships, claiming the first outright American Athletic Conference championship in 2019. That championship clinched the program's first-ever New Year's Six Bowl berth with a 2019 Cotton Bowl appearance. Â
