Memphis Set to Host Florida Atlantic in American Conference Opener Sunday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team will play its opening match of American Conference play against the Florida Atlantic Owls on Sunday.
The 7 p.m. match will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Tyler Springs on the call.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis (4-1-1) continues its strong start to the season, most recently securing a 2-2 draw at Furman, a program that was in last season's College Cup. In the match, Memphis carried a 2-1 lead into the dying seconds before Furman equalized in the final minute on a penalty kick.
Memphis' attack has become more balanced going into conference play, with the Tigers' last two goals being scored by a holding midfielder and a defender. Henrique Cruz and Dino Stavros picked up Memphis' two goals at Furman, with Miller Lashlee supplying an assist on Stavros' goal to put him in the lead for total points with nine. Lashlee still sits tied with Renan Syrio and Carson Banham for the lead in goals, with all three sitting at three on the season. Stavros also picked up a second weekly honor in a row, being named an honorable mention after recording a goal and an assist against the Paladins.
Memphis' defense has been the key to the Tigers' success, as a back line including Junior Saint Juste, Ethan Cook and Marko Stajnko has played a total of 1,470 of a possible combined 1,620 minutes this season.
Junior transfer goalkeeper Mathias Christensen made his first start of the season for the Tigers in the draw, logging nine saves, the most by a Memphis goalkeeper since 2018.

Florida Atlantic (2-0-4) stands as one of two American teams without a loss this year, along with Missouri State. Each of the Owls' last three matches have resulted in a draw, including a 3-3 effort against then No. 20 NC State.
Michel Tentchou, a transfer from NAIA Northwestern Ohio, leads the team with seven points on three goals and an assist. Right behind him in both goals and points is Xavi Csato, a Rider transfer with six points and two goals, followed by the team's assists leader, David Jesus, who has three this season.
The Owls did have a pair of outfield players named to the Preseason American Conference Team in Felipe Santos and David Roberts, but the pair have combined for 188 minutes of a possible 1,080 minutes this season.
The biggest piece of Florida Atlantic's early success has been goalkeeper Alfred Mikkelsen. The Preseason American Conference Goalkeeper of the Year has lived up to that title, posting four clean sheets and a goals-against-average of 0.67. His defense has also been crucial as he is currently only facing an average of three shots on goal per contest.

The overall series stands even at 2-2-1, with head coach Richard Mulrooney currently 2-2 against the Owls. All four results in Mulrooney's tenure have come in the last four seasons, with the home team winning each matchup.
