Memphis Set for Sunshine State Match Against Jacksonville
Sep 05, 2025 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis (1-2-2) men's soccer travels to Florida for a nonconference match against Jacksonville on Sunday. The match is set for a 5:00 p.m. CT kick and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The programs share numerous opponents on their 2025 schedules, but the Tigers and Dolphins have never faced each other in a regular season contest.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis (1-2-2) fell 3-1 in its most recent contest against FGCU, an opponent in the same conference as Jacksonville. An early goal by Saad Chaouki was not enough as FGCU equalized right before half and added two goals in the second half to secure a win.
Chaouki has emerged as Memphis' goal leader with two in the early stages of the season and is currently tied with Luciano Galizzi and Eben McIntyre in total points, with both McIntyre and Galizzi sitting with four points from a goal and two assists each.
Filip Sabatti struggled in his most recent match, conceding three goals and now holding a .720 save percentage on the season. The reigning American Goalkeeper of the Year has recorded four or more saves in three of five contests this season but has a goals-against-average of 1.40.
Memphis is currently 0-2-1 when the Tigers' opponents have won the shots-on-goal battle, so a key for the Tigers in the upcoming matchup will be to pressure the opposing goalkeeper and keep shots on-target.
SCOUTING THE DOLPHINS
Jacksonville (2-2-0) is set to host this match after securing a 2-0 victory over UTRGV this past Sunday.
The Dolphins were picked to finish sixth in the Atlantic Sun Conference, below FGCU and Lipscomb, opponents that Memphis has already faced this season.
Jacksonville is currently averaging three goals per game, partially due to a 9-1 win over NCCAA opponent, Trinity College of Jacksonville. Senior attacker Nicolas Aanensen Karlsen leads the Dolphins with seven points (three goals, one assist) and is tied with Christian Lindtner Wahlstroem (one goal, three assists) in goal contributions with four. Two of Jacksonville's 12 goals have come from the penalty spot, both against Trinity College of Jacksonville. Against fellow American Conference side, Florida Atlantic, the Dolphin offense was only able to register three shots on goal.
Two goalkeepers have made starts this season for the Dolphins, with senior Christian Sekanina earning three starts and is playing to a 1.00 goals-against-average with six saves on 28 shots faced. Sophomore goalkeeper Simen Havig earned a start against Florida Atlantic and kept the Dolphins in the match, recording two saves and only conceding once.
THE SERIES WITH JACKSONVILLE
Like Memphis' last match against FGCU, this Sunday will be the first-ever meeting between Memphis and Jacksonville. The two programs have never faced each other despite having many overlapping opponents this season, including Florida Atlantic, UAB, FGCU and Mercer.
