Chaouki’s Last-Minute Goal Pushes Memphis Past UAB, 3-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Memphis (2-4-3, 1-1-0 American) men's soccer capitalized early and found an 84th-minute game-winner by Saad Chaouki to defeat UAB (1-5-1, 0-2-0 American), 3-2, Sunday night at PNC Field.
After scoring twice in the first half, Memphis found itself level with the Blazers at the 60-minute mark. Saad Chaouki found the back of the net for the game-winning goal from a low pass by Adam Aboohamidi.

Memphis returns home for a Saturday match against Tulsa on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ and will be Memphis' Cancer Kickers Night promotion.

KEY MOMENTS
- 16' – Memphis ended a 350-minute long scoring drought as Samuel Mutiri scored Memphis' first goal of American Conference play, with assists being credited to Luciano Galizzi and Eben McIntyre.
- 36' – Another Tiger recorded their first goal in the Memphis blue as a headed pass by Adam Aboohamidi found the feet of freshman Miller Lashlee, who found the back of the net.
- An assist was also credited to Luciano Galizzi, his second of the match and fourth of the season.
- 43' – After a foul in the box by Memphis' Dominic Breidenbach, Gustavo Barbosa stepped up and converted on the penalty to cut the deficit in half before halftime.
- It was the fourth penalty against the Tigers this season, in which Memphis opponents have now converted on three of those attempts. Both marks are the highest since 2021, when Memphis opponents converted on all seven penalty kick attempts.
- 60' – In the early stages of the second half, UAB found an equalizer off the foot of Humphrey Doh.
- 76' – The Tigers had a chance to take the lead but a shot outside the box by Alejo Tangredi just sailed high of the net.
- 83' – Saad Chaouki found Adam Aboohamidi in open space going down the left wing, and Aboohamidi's return pass once entering the box found Chaouki, who scored the eventual game-winning goal.
- 89' – Memphis was able to run out the final 100 seconds as UAB's Ivan Jolivet was issued a red card, putting Memphis up a player to close out the match.
- Samuel Mutiri's goal was his first as a Tiger since transferring from Mobile and was Memphis' first goal in its last 353 minutes of play.
- Memphis's eight shots on goal were the most in a match for the Tigers this season, surpassing a previous high of seven on opening night against Lipscomb.
- The win was Memphis' first win while being outpaced in total shots since a 2-1 victory against Florida Atlantic on Oct. 26, 2024.
- Miller Lashlee recorded his first collegiate goal after coming on as a substitution and is the first member of the freshman group to find the scoresheet.
- Saad Chaouki now sits at three goals this season, a mark that leads the team and is just two shy of the single-season goal leader from the 2024 season.
- Luciano Galizzi and Adam Aboohamidi each had two assists in the victory and sit at four assists each on the season.
- Memphis' assist leader throughout all of the 2024 season was Lleyton Imparato, who finished the season with five assists.
- The Tigers have 13 assists as a team through nine matches, whereas Memphis only recorded 18 assists in 17 matches during the 2024 season.
- Filip Sabatti made his return to the net for the first time since Sept. 3, recording four saves and moving his record to 2-2-2 on the season.
- Three Tigers (Filip Sabatti, Dino Stavros, Ryan Ruguaru) logged a full 90 minutes played in the victory.
- Stavros leads all Tigers with 766 minutes played.
- Three cards were issued in the match, with one going to a Memphis player and two to UAB.
- Goal scorer Miller Lashlee was assessed a yellow card shortly after play resumed from his first goal.
- For UAB, Ivan Joliet was issued both a yellow and red card for unsporting behavior, leaving UAB with 10 players for the final 100 seconds of the contest.
