MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The ninth-ranked Memphis women's soccer team will play its American Conference home opener on Thursday night, battling UAB at 7:00 p.m. at the Track and Soccer Stadium.
The Tigers (7-0-1, 1-0 American) moved up one spot in the United Soccer Coaches poll on Tuesday afternoon on the back of Taliah Brooks' game-winner at Charlotte. Brooks is one of four players on the team with three-plus goals through eight games (Ellis Kelly – five, Ai Kitagawa – four, Elise Perron – three).
Memphis will face the Blazers for the 29th time ever, the Tigers' most-played matchup in program history. Memphis holds a 17-9-2 advantage in the series fueled by 15 wins in the last 18 games. Last season, the teams played to a scoreless draw in the conference opener in Birmingham, which snapped a 10-game winning streak for Brooks Monaghan's crew.
UAB (3-2-4) has recorded draws in three consecutive games, including a 3-3 thriller last Thursday at home against No. 25 Rice. They have played two common opponents, falling to Ole Miss, 1-0, in Oxford and defeating Southern Miss, 5-1. Last year, they finished the conference season with a five-game unbeaten streak to secure the fifth seed, falling to Rice in the quarterfinals.
Lisa Mann is in her third year at the helm for the Blazers after four years at West Virginia State University. Jette Zimmer and Avery Berryman share the team lead with three goals each.
