No. 15 Memphis Finds Second-Half Winner to Topple Missouri, 2-1
Aug 28, 2025 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – No. 15 Memphis women's soccer scored once in each half en route to their fifth consecutive victory, a 2-1 contest over Missouri on Thursday night at the Track and Soccer Stadium.
All four of Memphis' (5-0) starting attackers contributed to goals, with Ellis Kelly getting on the end of a ground cross from Elise Perron in the 26th minute. Mizzou (1-2-1) equalized right before the break, but Ai Kitagawa found the winner in the 71st minute, with the help of Ashley Henderson.
"It was a game of highs and lows," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "It's always tough to maintain the level after a big win, and although we weren't a 10 out of 10, we did enough to get the result. Elise Perron was the best player on the pitch. She had her best game of the year against Vanderbilt and followed it up with an even better performance tonight."
Perron was a problem for the left side of Missouri's defense all evening; she split two defenders and drove into the box to deliver her assist on Kelly's fifth goal of her freshman campaign.
After Missouri earned a foul down their left flank, Mia Yang got on the end of Landis Canada's delivery and headed it into the far-left corner to level the score in the 43rd minute.
The host Tigers responded well after the break, pushing for the winning goal which came after wonderful interplay between Henderson and Kitagawa. The sophomore from Japan's shot rifled off the post, back off the keeper and into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the young season.
Goalkeeper Abby Kudla made just two official saves but was crucial in commanding her penalty area, collecting crosses and stifling attacks before they could culminate. Memphis outshot the visitors in each half, totaling 14 shots to Mizzou's 10.
The second and final non-conference road game will be this Sunday, August 31, when Memphis takes on Iowa State in Ames. The match will kick off at 6:00 p.m. and stream on ESPN+.
