Tigers Fall to North Texas on the Road

DENTON, Texas – Memphis (10-17, 1-11 American) dropped a three-set match to North Texas (18-6, 8-3 American) inside North Texas Volleyball Center on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams opened the first set trading points early, with Zaniah Hoskins, Brianna Washington and Riley McCloskey contributing kills before a 7-0 run by North Texas gave the Mean Green a 13-6 advantage. The Tigers responded with a 4-0 run to cut into the deficit, but several attack errors and a late kill by Ryann Vik gave North Texas a 25-16 victory in the first set.
Memphis built early momentum in the second set with a 6-3 run, but North Texas rallied to erase the deficit. McCloskey and Jasmyn Tate posted back-to-back kills before Jahniya Jackson sparked a 3-0 run for the Mean Green. North Texas followed with an 8-0 stretch, led by kills from Vik, Loredana Fouonji, Reese Watters and Regan Bedell to take control of the set. The Tigers answered with a short 3-0 spurt to make it a three-point set, but three late errors allowed the Mean Green to finish the frame on a 4-0 run capped by another Vik kill, taking the set 25-21.
North Texas opened the third with an 8-3 run before Memphis started to chip away at the lead. Both teams battled point-for-point until the Mean Green used a 4-0 run with kills from Croshaw and Jackson to create separation. Henderson responded with a kill, and three North Texas attack errors made it a two-point set. The teams traded points down the stretch, but Watters sealed the match with a late kill for a 25-22 win.
NOTABLES
- Zaniah Hoskins led the offense with seven kills and 8.5 points.
- Jasmyn Tate and Janyah Henderson followed with six and five kills, respectively.
- Tate set her season high and tied her conference high in service aces with two.
- Setter Sydney Marshall put up 23 assists to make it four matches in a row with 20-plus assists.
- Henderson put up five blocks including one solo block in the match.
- The junior has now put up at least five blocks in 11 matches this season.
- Abigail Schlueter recorded 15 digs in tonight's match.
- Schlueter has now put up 10 plus digs in 15 matches this season.
- Taylor Hampton followed with nine digs.
UP NEXT
Memphis does not play until next Wednesday when the Tigers will travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on UAB at 7 p.m. before returning to Elma Roane Fieldhouse next Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.
