Henigan, Martin Named AAC Players of the Week
Sep 16, 2024 | Football
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis senior quarterback Seth Henigan and redshirt-junior linebacker Chandler Martin were named the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, the conference announced Monday.
Memphis' all-time leading passer completed 25-of-38 attempts for 272 yards, a pair of touchdowns and an interception to help lead the No. RV/23 Tigers (3-0) past preseason No. 10 Florida State (0-3), 20-12, in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday. The road win over a power conference opponent marked the first for Memphis since taking down Kansas in 2015.
The honor marked the third AAC Offensive Player of the Week nod of the Denton, Texas, native's career. Henigan extended his streak of throwing a touchdown pass to 40-consecutive games – or every game of his career. The senior signal caller's streak is now tied for the third longest in NCAA history with 2017 Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield.
A captain of the Tiger defense, Martin, totaled eight tackles (six solo) with 2.5 going for a loss including a clutch fourth-quarter sack of Florida State's DJ Uiagalelei with 2:46 remaining in the eventual statement win. He also recovered a fumble forced by defensive back An'Darius Coffey on the second play of the game that led to an eventual Caden Costa field goal.
Martin has been the anchor of a much-improved Memphis defense this season that held Florida State to just 238 total yards in the win. The Tigers' run defense was superb, dominating the veteran Seminoles offensive line and holding FSU to just 37 yards rushing on 24 attempts (1.5 YPC).
It marks the first-career AAC Defensive Player of the Week honor for the Lithonia, Georgia, native who leads Memphis and ranks ninth in the nation with 5.5 tackles for loss this season.
The 23rd-ranked Tigers go on the road to Annapolis, Maryland, for their first AAC game of the year against Navy (2-0, 1-0 AAC) on Sept. 21 with kick scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network.
Memphis football fans can see the Tigers back in action at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 28 vs. Middle Tennessee. Single-game tickets for the 2024 season can be found at THIS LINK.
