Tigers Fall to Lipscomb in Season Opener, 2-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger men's soccer team dropped its 2024 season opener, 2-1, against Lipscomb Thursday night at the Track & Soccer Complex.
After falling behind by two scores early in the second half, the Tigers were finally able to find the back of the net in the 59th minute. The final minutes saw a handful of good looks come up empty as the Bisons held on for the road victory.

Memphis will be back in action Sunday with a 6 p.m. home match for senior night against Evansville. There will be a pregame ceremony to honor seven Tigers at 5:30 p.m.

KEY MOMENTS
- The Tiger offense made Lipscomb's keeper work all night, firing off 19 shots and putting eight on target.
- Lipscomb controlled the early minutes of the match and came away with a couple of good looks before Dan Karsten struck in the 23rd minute with a left-footed rocket from 20-yards out to put the Bisons in front 1-0 after the first half.
- Lipscomb added to its advantage in the 54th minute when Roen Davis slotted home a pass from Daniel Stampatori just in front of the goal.
- The Tigers didn't waste any time in cutting into the deficit. Senior Gabriel Christensen made a cut on the right side and dribbled into the box before sliding a ball to junior transfer Lleyton Imparato who fired a left-footed rocket inside the left post.
- The Tigers had seven shots in the final 25+ minutes with their best looks getting stopped at the net.
NOTABLES
- Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Cox made his first collegiate start in net for the Tigers. He came away with three saves in 90 minutes.
- Memphis outshot Lipscomb 18-11 overall, including an 8-5 advantage on target.
- Imparato recorded his third-career goal after netting two scores in two seasons at Temple.
- The match was the first time since 2019 that the Tigers opened the regular season at home.
